Myth 6: Schizophrenia is caused by religious or spiritual problems: such as not praying enough or being morally corrupt and so on. I disagree that wrong belief systems are the cause.
Myths In Mental Health Stigma
What’s required is mental health awareness about mental health matters. Self awareness can go a long way in helping a person understand and cope. Spiritual problems might be real, but so is schizophrenia. Schizophrenia does not have a spiritual solution.
Indeed, I side with science on this issue. I don’t want to disparage belief systems, but I cannot reasonably accept a religious interpretation of my symptoms. At one point I did!

Aha! Schizophrenia is a spiritual problem… BC Schizophrenia Society is running a campaign. Bust a Schizophrenia Myth. We're trying to raise awareness of #SchizophreniaFacts in an effort to #SmashStigma.
Maybe you need an exorcism! I've heard from people that you need exorcism because there're demons inside you. There are spiritual forces talking inside your head. Maybe God is talking to you. That—that voices inside your head are God talking to you and giving you instructions.
Sounds like you need to fix your beliefs! I've heard people say that the right solution to schizophrenia is a correct belief, that if you had the correct belief, you wouldn't have the problems, you wouldn't have the preoccupation, the hallucination, or the anxiety, any of those psychological symptoms.
Knowing the schizophrenia facts helps me understand that the condition does not have a spiritual origin. Now don't get me wrong, I don't want to disparage anybody's beliefs or belief systems. However, I'm going to take the side of science on this issue. Schizophrenia, schizoaffective, and bipolar are psychiatric conditions, not spiritual things, not conspiracy things.
I used to have a more spiritualistic interpretation of my symptoms. I've rooted out some of those thoughts and think of them as delusions now, thinking I had a special message given to me to interpret and give to the world in some way. It would be dangerous to act on those beliefs.
